New Learnings and Growing Opportunities - The Team 19 visit to Nepal
Team 19 completed their trip to Nepal in November 2017. The group was led by Dr. Nora Cullen and consisted of four new team members – physical medicine and rehabilitation residents Drs. Ali Rendely and McKyla McIntyre, registered nurse Natalie Bailey, social worker Pauline Orr, and occupational therapist Carolina Bottari.
United Mission Hospital Tansen (UMH)
Care: Throughout the time at UMH, Team 19 completed physician ward rounds to observe and discuss complex rehab patients, including those who had sustained spinal cord injuries, pressure ulcers and strokes. The team also joined the physiotherapy inpatient and outpatient teams completing assessments and providing daily treatment to neurorehab patients, including one individual recovering from Guillain Barré Syndrome.
Pauline spent significant time at the New Life Psychiatric Rehab facility, where she worked alongside a dedicated inter-professional team providing care and assistance with program development for individuals living in the group facility.
The team also completed two home visits in the Tansen community. They offered medication recommendations and therapy treatment plans including motor recovery techniques and strategies for safe ambulation.
Teaching and Learning: Team 19 also delivered teaching sessions to the UMH staff on a variety of topics, including "What is Physiatry?" and "The Benefits of Rehab", as well as a lecture on pressure ulcers. They also offered small group learning to the therapy team reading CT scans of the head, as well as introductions to the American Spinal Cord Injury Association (ASIA) Scale and the Bobath Technique (a problem-solving approach used to assess and treat people with a lesion to the brain or spine).
Green Pastures Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre (GPH)
After a full and exciting week in Tansen, Team 19 headed to Pokhara to visit Green Pastures Hospital (GPH)This portion of the trip focused on discussions surrounding the current state of rehabilitation in Nepal and GPH’s future goal of becoming a national referral centre for trauma and disability, including supporting the Centre’s strategic plan.
Teaching & Learning: on the team offered bedside and more formal teaching sessions to the residents, physicians and health professions (PT, OT, SLP, Rehab Assistants) on bowel and bladder protocols for spinal chord injury (SCI), sexuality after stroke, SCI admission protocols, and the use of a standardized tool to evaluate and treat low back pain.
Equipment & Resources: With the support of generous donors from Toronto, Montreal and across Canada, Team 19 donated equipment to both UMH and GPH – including thermoplastic splints, splinting materials, portable exercise equipment, and catheter and wound care supplies.
