Supporting Recovery Through Shared Experience
Sandra Mills, Health Educator, M. Ed.
A member of Team 24, Sandra had the pleasure of spending time with Chet Adhikari at the Green Pastures Rehab Hospital in Pokhara, Nepal. Sandra met with Chet daily while the team was in Pokhara to talk through strategies for talking with patients about sexual health from the Nepali perspective. She learned so much from him as he willingly shared information about Nepal, its people and culture, and the hospital where we works.
Chet has been a Peer Counselor at Green Pastures Hospital for 12 years. He works mainly with people who have a spinal cord injury, but he also provides support to those living with stroke and brain injury.
Chet engages with patients in a variety of ways, working to ensure they receive the information and education they need to live in the community. He helps with health education, motivational and psychological counselling, and sexual health education, as well as teaches new wheelchair skills.
Chet’s work goes beyond the hospital and he often follows patients into the community long after they have been discharged from inpatient rehabilitation. He is able to identify needs for further health education and counselling, as well as continue to help with advanced wheelchair skill development.
Chet says that the best part of his job is helping patients learn how to be independent to live their usual life, motivating them to cope with upcoming problems and sharing stories of success.
